FAyaz Bhojani has 17 years of experience in corporate affairs and heads the firm’s Corporate Law department. He is a graduate of the world-renowned Berkeley Law School at the University of California. Having consulted for some of the leading banks, mining, oil and gas, and insurance companies, FAyaz brings a strong commercial sense to any legal transaction. Key specializations include corporate and commercial law with a focus on mining law, oil and gas, tax law, banking and mergers and acquisitions. As an undergraduate, FAyaz studied actuarial science under the Society of Actuaries (SOA), bringing with him some sharp mathematical skills.
FAyaz was cited in the Chambers Global 2015 Guide, World’s Leading Lawyers for Business as a ‘leading individual’ and achieved a ranking in the IFLR1000. Leading the corporate team, FAyaz has been involved in mergers in the oil and gas, and mining sectors with total value of over USD 20B and tax disputes of nearly USD 12B. FAyaz and the corporate team recently just completed representing an international oil and gas company in its takeover of another multinational company with a presence in over 20 countries worldwide. When another multinational fell foul of the anti-trust regime, FAyaz and his team were called upon to intervene and which was successfully resolved saving the company over USD 1B in fines.
FAyaz also regularly conducts courses for senior executives on mining and oil and gas laws. Recently he conducted a course on the new Petroleum Act for key government stakeholders and has just recently returned from conducting an in house course for senior executives on the Mining Act for a foreign mining company with a presence in Tanzania.
On regulatory compliance and approvals, FAyaz and his team work closely with all key regulators including the Energy and Water Utility Authority (EWURA), Sumatra, TCAA, TCRA, Fair Competition Commission, National Environmental Management Council amongst others. With the current strict interpretative approach the government is taking, compliance and ensuring permits are timely processed is critical to any project.
He is also regularly called upon to provide his expert opinion on legislation and regulations in the oil and gas, tax and mining fields, most recently having done an in depth review of both the Petroleum Act 2015 and the new VAT Act. When a world class uranium miner required a lead counsel to represent its interests before the World Heritage Committee in Paris, France, FAyaz was the only Tanzanian lawyer to have been selected and successfully accomplished the mission in 18 months. This involved a complex legal and technical process and FAyaz led a team of a dozen experts to complete the assignment.
An excellent drafts person, FAyaz is the man behind FB Attorneys three most popular publications – the monthly Legal Digest, Legal Update published when there is an update and the famous weekly Q&A with FB Attorneys that is published in the Daily News every Monday and circulated to over 50,000 readers electronically every week.
